[Kim Maengnyeong's Golf English Conversation] "Shot That Clears the Tree"

[Kim Maengnyeong's Golf English Conversation] "Shot That Clears the Tree" It is difficult to clear tall trees with a mid iron.

"How to hit a golf ball over trees."

When playing a round, trees sometimes appear as obstacles. How do you get past them? There are three methods: hitting the ball over the tree to attack directly, using a curve shot to go around the tree, or executing a low-trajectory shot under the tree.

First, let's learn the technique for a high-trajectory shot that clears the tree. Start by eliminating any pressure or fear. Take your stance with the ball positioned more forward than normal. Open up the clubface firmly. Grip the club softly but firmly. Use an open stance with both feet, placing slightly more weight on the right foot while standing as comfortably as possible.

Here, the ball is positioned in front of the left foot. Swing smoothly, forming a steep 'V' shape after impact. It is important that the backswing and finish flow continuously. Keep your eyes on the ball and make precise contact. After striking, hold a high finish position. To achieve a high finish, place your weight on the heels.

Choose a club that you're certain will launch high enough to carry over the treetops. For example, a 9-iron, pitching wedge, or sand wedge. Since the goal is to clear the tree, you will sacrifice some distance. When in a poor lie, make a safe choice. A missed shot could send the ball into deep rough or a penalty area, creating a more difficult situation.

A (golfer): Do you think I can clear that tall tree?

B (caddy): I think you can, as long as you use a club with a lot of loft. Say a wedge or a 9-iron.

C (pro golfer): I don't think so. It's a pretty tall tree to clear, especially from a bad lie.

A (golfer): Okay, I'll play it safe and hit it around it.

C (pro golfer): That's a pretty good decision.
