[Asia Economy Reporter Baek Kyunghwan] The bail request of Jeong Jeong-sun, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea who was indicted and detained on charges of accounting fraud during the April 15 general election, was denied.
On the 26th, the Criminal Division 11 of Cheongju District Court (Chief Judge Jo Hyeong-woo) dismissed Jeong's bail request.
Jeong was brought to trial on charges of violating the Public Official Election Act, the Political Funds Act, and the Personal Information Protection Act. Among the charges, Jeong is accused of receiving 20 million won in cash from accounting manager A in mid-March before the general election under the pretext of election funds, as well as having election campaign workers pay 7.8 million won in vehicle rental fees.
Earlier, on the 13th, Jeong applied for bail through his attorney, arguing that "there is no risk of evidence destruction, which was the reason for detention, and the defendant's right to defense must be guaranteed."
However, the court ruled to maintain the detention status, stating, "There is a reason for evidence destruction as specified in Article 95, Clause 3 of the Criminal Procedure Act."
