[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bong-ju] A mother who killed her son with a weapon after giving him sleeping pills has been sentenced to a heavy prison term.

On the 26th, the 1st Criminal Division of the Suncheon Branch of the Gwangju District Court sentenced A (38), who was detained and prosecuted on charges of murder, to 16 years in prison.

A was tried on charges of stabbing her teenage son, who was riding in a car with her, to death with a weapon on a road in Yeosu-si, Jeollanam-do, at around 7:30 p.m. on August 25.

After picking up her son from an academy, A gave him a drink containing sleeping pills to put him to sleep and then killed him. She surrendered to the police that night.

In the police investigation, A stated, "I am suffering from depression," and confessed to the crime.

The court stated, "While it is somewhat acknowledged that the defendant had difficulty in social life due to depression, brutally killing her 15-year-old son shows internal resentment and madness," adding, "Since the crime was planned and cruel, and to sound an alarm against treating children like accessories, a heavy sentence is inevitable," explaining the reason for the sentencing.

However, the court also noted, "Consideration was given to the fact that she submitted a letter of remorse and is regretting her actions, surrendered voluntarily after the crime, and had an unstable psychological state."
