[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Cho] The traditional Korean dance Taepyeongmu, performed by queens or kings to pray for the nation's peace and prosperity, has been reborn as augmented reality (AR) content.
SK Telecom announced on the 26th that, amid the difficult times caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, it has conducted the 'Wishing for Peace' campaign in collaboration with the Cultural Heritage Administration to pray for the peace of the world and the people and to reinterpret and preserve Korea's traditional cultural heritage based on ICT technology.
The Taepyeongmu produced as AR content is available on SK Telecom's Jump AR application. Through this, anyone can easily and vividly enjoy Korea's beautiful traditional dance. Starting with Hong Kong within this year, it will also be released on Jump AR apps in various countries, serving as an opportunity to widely promote Korea's beautiful traditional dance.
This AR content was produced at SK Telecom's Jump Studio, which possesses world-class 3D volumetric video capture technology. In particular, Yang Seong-ok, the holder of National Intangible Cultural Property No. 92 Taepyeongmu, personally participated to pray for the peace of the world and the people, adding deeper significance.
As part of the 'Wishing for Peace' campaign, SKT will also release collaborative content between Taepyeongmu AR and Leeah Kim, a representative K-pop choreographer. For this campaign, Leeah Kim personally learned Taepyeongmu from master Yang Seong-ok and reinterpreted it in a modern way.
Leeah Kim will perform dance alongside the AR-implemented Taepyeongmu by master Yang Seong-ok in various spaces including Gyeongbokgung Palace. Viewers can enjoy a surreal Taepyeongmu performance where master Yang and Leeah Kim appear in multiple forms like cloning or grow to giant sizes.
The AR Taepyeongmu and Leeah Kim collaboration performance will be available from the 27th on SK Telecom’s official YouTube channel and the 1MILLION Dance Studio official YouTube channel.
SK Telecom will also hold a comment event on its official YouTube channel. From the 27th to December 17th, viewers who leave a comment wishing for peace along with the hashtag '#WishingForPeace' on the AR Taepyeongmu and Leeah Kim collaboration performance video on SK Telecom’s YouTube channel will be entered into a draw. One hundred winners will receive a gift kit consisting of ▲a figure dressed in royal costume ▲a mask ▲hand sanitizer.
Song Gwang-hyun, head of SK Telecom’s PR2 Office, said, "We planned a year-end campaign to provide customers with a unique experience while hoping for a more peaceful next year than this year. We will continue to strive in various ways to provide differentiated experiences to customers through ICT technology."
