Attracting Major Public Institutions Related to 3 Key Future Strategic Industries
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Jeong Seunghyun] Mokpo City has selected renewable energy industry, seafood food industry, and tourism industry as its three major future strategic industries and is making every effort to revitalize the local economy by attracting related public institutions.
According to Mokpo City on the 25th, a total project cost of 31.5 billion KRW will be invested by 2023 to establish an offshore wind power research and development center in the Daeyang Industrial Complex. This center will serve as the integrated control center for the large-scale 8.2GW offshore wind power complex being established in Sinan, supporting the entire process from site selection to real-time facility status monitoring and maintenance.
In particular, the Daeyang Industrial Complex was designated as a national energy convergence complex in November last year, and it is expected that attracting companies producing offshore wind power-related equipment and parts will also be positive, led by the center.
Along with this, a seafood food export complex that can lead the seafood food industry will be established in the Daeyang Industrial Complex. It will comprehensively support companies' export activities by establishing seafood food research and development for Jeonnam seaweed, an international seafood trading center, and processing plants.
About 30,000㎡ of land within the Daeyang Industrial Complex will be developed with a total project cost of 108.9 billion KRW, aiming for completion in 2022. This year, 2.4 billion KRW of national funds have been secured to proceed with basic planning and detailed design services.
An eco-friendly fuel propulsion research center will be established in Namhang. This research facility is intended to support the eco-friendly ship cluster project to be developed in Namhang and is scheduled for completion in 2023.
With the International Maritime Organization (IMO) strengthening environmental regulations, the development of zero-carbon fuels has become a major topic in the shipbuilding industry, and Namhang is expected to serve as a hub for the eco-friendly ship industry.
In Gohado, where the offshore cable car station and cotton experience center are established, a large-scale experience facility will be built, becoming a representative tourism resource of Mokpo.
The National Honam Biological Resources Center, equipped with a children's experience center, education center, and exhibition hall for the purpose of researching island and coastal biological resources, is scheduled to open by the end of this year.
The Sewol Ferry Safety Experience Complex, being developed nearby, will display the original hull and allow some internal experiences, creating a nature-friendly space where disaster experiences are possible.
Kim Jongsik, Mayor of Mokpo, said, “We are attracting related public institutions and developing infrastructure to foster our city's three major future strategic industries,” adding, “We will systematically promote these efforts to build a solid industrial ecosystem in our region.”
