A Total of 267 Chinese Apps Banned in India
Retaliatory Measure Due to Border Dispute
[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] India, which has been in conflict with China over border issues, has additionally banned 43 Chinese-made applications (apps), including Alibaba.
According to local media such as the Times of India on the 25th, the Indian government stated that based on reports from the Cyber Crime Response Center and others, these Chinese apps threaten India's sovereignty, defense, public order, and engage in harmful activities.
The banned apps include Alibaba's e-commerce platform AliExpress and Alibaba's live sales platform Taobao Live.
Earlier, in June, India banned popular Chinese apps such as the Chinese social networking service (SNS) TikTok, Weibo, and the mobile game Battlegrounds.
The Times of India reported, "With this, the Chinese government has had a total of 267 Chinese apps banned."
So far, the Indian government has consistently emphasized safety and security as the reasons behind banning Chinese apps, but the general consensus is that it is a retaliatory measure due to border disputes with China.
The Times of India reported, "This measure came amid ongoing tensions at the border with China."
In June, over 20 Indian soldiers died in a dispute in the Galwan Valley border area, which has increased anti-China sentiment within India.
