[Asia Economy Reporter Seungjin Lee] Homeplus will hold the ‘2020 Year-End Clearance Sale,’ gathering this year’s best-selling products at all stores nationwide and online from the 26th to December 16th for three weeks at discounted prices.
This event was planned to wrap up the changed daily life due to the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and to lower the year-end shopping basket prices, which tend to increase spending. Fresh and processed foods, daily necessities, fashion, and other categories will offer the most sought-after products by customers throughout the year at affordable prices over three weeks.
During the first week, from the 26th to December 2nd, more than 4,500 products including fresh foods and ready meals, whose demand surged due to the home dining trend, as well as alcoholic beverages and home training supplies, will be available at special prices. Homeplus online mall’s livestock sales from March to November this year soared by 51% compared to the same period last year, fruit sales increased by 42%, and seafood and vegetable sales rose by 41% each. Ready meals recorded a 28% sales growth, and home training supplies saw a 7% increase.
First, under the theme of ‘This Year’s Home Meal,’ fresh foods are prepared at affordable prices. Among the recipes Homeplus has proposed weekly, the most popular ingredients for Hanwoo Samhap (a Korean beef dish) are offered at big deal prices, with up to 40% discount on all Nonghyup Safe Hanwoo products for My Homeplus members. Shiitake mushrooms and grilled scallop slices are also offered at low prices.
Additionally, organic rice cultivated by snail farming (10kg/pack) is sold for 39,900 won, domestic pork belly and neck meat (100g) each for 2,090 won, and Norwegian fresh salmon for sashimi (100g, from Norway) for 2,990 won. Other seasonal foods such as prime chuck eye roll and choice brisket for steak, paprika, strawberries, and mussels are also offered at affordable prices.
Along with home meals, best-selling ready meals that saw a surge in demand due to the home drinking and camping trends include four types of Signature Fried Rice at 7,990 won each, two types of Signature Budae Jjigae (army stew) at 8,990 won each, and Signature Potato Sujebi Soft Tofu Stew at 6,990 won, with an additional 10% discount when purchasing two or more of each.
A total clearance of wines for home drinkers is also underway. Six types of Chilean Casillero are offered at 30,000 won for three bottles, Australia’s Barossa Ink, a best new product of the year, two types at 19,900 won, and Chilean 1887 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon at 9,900 won. Three types of American Copper Ridge and three large-capacity Livingstone wines are also sold at affordable prices.
In fashion, F2F winter new products are offered at up to 30% off, all winter innerwear items are 30% off when purchasing two or more, priced from 9,990 won to 39,990 won, thermal socks and slippers are 20% off when buying two or more, and winter beanies and knit gloves come with a buy-one-get-one-free offer. Additionally, from the 26th to 29th, 34 stores and the shopping mall will hold a ‘Super Sale Mallbang Day’ offering brand products at up to 50% discount, and a 5,000 won instant discount is provided for purchases over 80,000 won with Shinhan Card.

We hope to ease the year-end household burden, which tends to increase spending, even if just a little.”
