Gangdong-gu Selected as Excellent Institution by Statistics Korea for 'GBP Big Data Portal Self-Development'


[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Jeong-hoon) was selected as an excellent institution in the '2020 Regional Statistics Best Practice Contest' hosted by Statistics Korea for the 'GBP Gangdong-gu Big Data Portal Self-Development and Operation.'


This contest aimed to discover and share best practices using regional statistics to strengthen awareness of the importance and activation of regional statistics, and was conducted targeting 243 metropolitan and basic local governments and research institutes nationwide.


Gangdong-gu received high praise for self-developing the 'GBP Gangdong-gu Big Data Portal (hereinafter GBP),' saving development costs worth hundreds of millions of won, and significantly improving data accessibility and work efficiency by integrating data scattered across institutions such as Statistics Korea and the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.


As of November 2020, the data provided through GBP includes a total of 269 types and 1,326,785 cases, covering various statistics such as population (total, gender, elderly, etc.), CCTV status, public restrooms and subway, evacuation facility locations, and COVID-19 analysis status.


All data is visualized with figures and images to provide visualized materials that enhance understanding and usability, and convenience is improved through simple integrated search and automatic analysis. Yearly trends, which are objective indicators that can predict future changes, are also provided.


Lee Jeong-hoon, Mayor of Gangdong-gu, said, “I am very pleased that the GBP Gangdong-gu Big Data Portal, which our Gangdong-gu developed independently, received good evaluations in the nationwide regional contest hosted by Statistics Korea, following the Seoul Creative Award Excellence Award and the Regional Statistics Policy Utilization Excellence Award. We will continue to solve residents' inconveniences and provide convenient services through smart administration based on big data.”
