[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyewon] LG Electronics has decided to join forces with the International Vaccine Institute (IVI) to provide free cholera vaccinations and disease prevention efforts in Ethiopia for three years starting next year.
LG Electronics and IVI plan to vaccinate approximately 40,000 residents in cholera-vulnerable areas and establish a disease surveillance system to strengthen local public health capabilities.
To this end, LG Electronics signed a business agreement on the 24th with IVI and the IVI Korea Supporters Association. Attending the signing ceremony were IVI Secretary-General Jerome Kim, IVI Korea Supporters Association Chairman Park Sangcheol, and LG Electronics Executive Vice President of External Cooperation Yoon Daesik.
IVI is a non-profit international organization established in 1997, led by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). It develops and distributes vaccines for developing countries and global health, and is the first international organization to have its headquarters in Korea.
Previously, LG Electronics has supported IVI since 2008, carrying out vaccine support projects targeting countries in Southeast Asia and Africa. From 2010 for five years, it supported vaccination and research on waterborne diseases in Ethiopia.
LG Electronics plans to utilize the Executive Social Contribution Fund for this project. Since 2004, LG Electronics has annually allocated a certain percentage of executives' salaries to the Executive Social Contribution Fund. This fund is used for volunteer activities and community improvement projects both domestically and internationally.
Secretary-General Kim stated, "Although interest has declined due to the COVID-19 pandemic, cholera still claims countless lives worldwide," adding, "We will work with LG Electronics to prevent and eradicate cholera not only in Ethiopia but globally."
Executive Vice President Yoon said, "We will fulfill our corporate social responsibility to solve disease and poverty issues in the Ethiopia region."
