Korea University Students Receive Applause for Special Donation, Making Headlines

Korea University Students Kang Eun-gyo, Kim Do-hyun, and Lim Hyun-woo Donate Prize Money (700,000 KRW) from Japanese Military Comfort Women Paper Contest Plus Personal Donation (300,000 KRW) to Support Scholarships for Low-Income Single-Parent Families in Anam-dong (2 Recipients, 500,000 KRW Each)

Korea University Students Receive Applause for Special Donation, Making Headlines After the donation delivery, Kim Dohyun (2nd year, Business Administration), Lim Hyunwoo (2nd year, Media Studies), Lee Seungro, Mayor of Seongbuk-gu, and Kang Eungyo (2nd year, Political Science and Diplomacy) are taking a commemorative photo.

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Special scholarships from Korea University students are warming up the local community.

The protagonists are Kang Eun-kyo (2nd year, Department of Political Science and International Relations), Kim Do-hyun (2nd year, Department of Business Administration), and Lim Hyun-woo (2nd year, Department of Media Studies) from Korea University, who earned the honor of an excellent team in the '2020 Academic Symposium Contest for the Restoration of Honor of Japanese Military Comfort Women Victims' with the theme 'The Direction Film Content Should Take to Improve Awareness of Japanese Military Comfort Women.'

The three students, Kang Eun-kyo, Kim Do-hyun, and Lim Hyun-woo, knocked on the door of the Anam-dong Community Service Center to use their prize money more meaningfully. They expressed their intention to donate 1 million KRW by adding 300,000 KRW of personal funds to the 700,000 KRW prize money to help low-income youth in the area, even if just a little.

Upon hearing the news, Lee Seung-ro, Mayor of Seongbuk-gu, personally met the students to express gratitude and encouragement and reportedly proposed awarding them a certificate of appreciation.

Lim Hyun-woo said, “I wanted to take on a meaningful challenge during my university life, so I applied for the contest and achieved good results. Together with my two friends, we agreed to take on a more meaningful task by helping underprivileged youth in Anam-dong, where our school is located.”

The 300,000 KRW personal donation was reportedly saved from pocket money and part-time job earnings.

The scholarship award ceremony held at 10 a.m. on the 23rd in the Seongbuk-gu Mayor’s office was attended by Anam-dong residents and related department staff, who encouraged and supported the three young students.

Lee Seung-ro, Mayor of Seongbuk-gu, said, “Recently, regarding the removal order of the Berlin Peace Statue of a Girl, Seongbuk-gu children and youth wrote 3,600 handwritten letters to the German people who stood with the statue. I was very proud to learn that Korea University students are also seeking ways to improve awareness of Japanese military comfort women victims through their papers and are exploring paths forward. Above all, their act of donating the fruits of their hard-earned research to help underprivileged youth in Anam-dong carries the weight of over 10 billion KRW and made me reflect on the role of administration.”

Seongbuk-gu plans to designate the special scholarship from Korea University students to the Seoul Social Welfare Community Chest and support two low-income single-parent students residing in Anam-dong with scholarships.
