[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] Despite the pandemic, the global semiconductor foundry market is expected to grow significantly this year compared to last year.

According to market research firm TrendForce on the 21st, global foundry revenue is projected to increase by 23.8% this year compared to the previous year.

TrendForce analyzed that semiconductor demand driven by remote work and online education, the spread of 5G smartphones, and the expansion of telecommunications infrastructure led market growth despite the global economic crisis caused by COVID-19.

Market research firm Omdia also forecasted that global foundry market revenue will rise from $60 billion last year to approximately $68.2 billion this year, an increase of 13.5%.

Omdia expects the revenue scale to steadily grow to $73.8 billion in 2021, $80.5 billion in 2022, $87.3 billion in 2023, and $94.4 billion in 2024.

TrendForce projected that in the third quarter of this year, TSMC will hold the top foundry market share at 53.9%, while Samsung Electronics is expected to rank second with 17.4%. Although Samsung Electronics is increasing its influence in the foundry market, the gap in market share with Taiwan's TSMC remains significant.
