Netflix Exclusive Release
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bong-ju] The movie 'Seungriho' chose to go to Netflix instead of theaters after much deliberation.
The film 'Seungriho' tells the story of the crew of the space junk cleaning ship Seungriho in 2092, who discover a humanoid robot named Dorothy, known as a weapon of mass destruction, and get involved in a dangerous deal.
This movie is attracting public attention as the first Korean SF blockbuster featuring Korean characters active in space.
'Seungriho' is directed by Jo Sung-hee, who previously showcased his unique imagination in creating new worlds in 'A Werewolf Boy' and 'Detective Hong Gil-dong: The Missing Village.' The main cast includes Song Joong-ki, Kim Tae-ri, Jin Seon-kyu, and Yoo Hae-jin.
In the film, the crew of Seungriho consists of pilot Tae-ho (Song Joong-ki), who does anything for money; leader Captain Jang (Kim Tae-ri), who once led a space pirate gang; engineer Tiger Park (Jin Seon-kyu), a former gang boss; and the nagging yet uniquely charming harpoon-wielding robot Updong-i (Yoo Hae-jin). They devise an ambitious plan to make a fortune by selling Dorothy, the humanoid robot known as a weapon of mass destruction, which has attracted the attention of the entire universe.
Regarding the decision to release on Netflix, Merry Christmas CEO Yoo Jung-hoon explained, "We chose Netflix as the most successful way to present 'Seungriho' to audiences not only in Korea but worldwide."
CEO Yoo described the film 'Seungriho' as "a movie produced on the premise of IP expansion into various contents such as series films, spin-off video content, webtoons, and games, all based on the same universe."
Netflix announced, "We are pleased to share the exciting news that 'Seungriho' will be released simultaneously in over 190 countries worldwide through Netflix," adding, "As cooperation between Netflix and the Korean creative community continues, we view the growing global interest in Korean films positively."
They further stated, "As Korean content across various formats and genres, including dramas and films, is loved by fans worldwide, we expect 'Seungriho' to also create a strong impact."
'Seungriho' will be exclusively released on Netflix with subtitles in 31 languages across more than 190 countries worldwide.
