[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Min-young] CJ ENM O Shopping Division announced on the 19th that it was selected as an ‘Excellent Institution’ in the eco-friendly consumption category at the ‘2020 Eco-friendly Technology Promotion and Consumption Activation’ government awards, the only home shopping company to receive the Minister of Environment Award.
The Eco-friendly Technology Promotion and Consumption Activation awards, hosted by the Ministry of Environment, were established with the purpose of providing sustainable growth through the promotion of eco-friendly consumption, production, and environmental technology and industry development. CJ ENM O Shopping Division was the only home shopping company to be named among the awardees. At the same time, it also won an encouragement prize at the ‘2020 Resource Circulation Good Packaging Contest.’
Since July 2017, CJ ENM O Shopping Division has been the first in the industry to introduce paper cushioning materials, eco-friendly cooling packages, and paper hanger boxes instead of vinyl air caps. Leading eco-friendly activities, it was the first in the distribution industry to apply the ‘Eco Tapeless Box,’ which requires no adhesive, instead of vinyl tape that is difficult to recycle, to packaging materials. The amount of vinyl and plastic packaging materials reduced by switching to eco-friendly packaging corresponds to 41 times the total area of Sangam World Cup Stadium in Mapo-gu, Seoul (214,199㎡). The weight reduction alone amounts to approximately 24.4 tons.
The eco-friendly paper packaging used so far amounts to about 3.26 million boxes, and by replacing plastic packaging materials such as OPP (Oriented Polypropylene) tape with paper tape, about 2,300 km of plastic tape used for packaging boxes was reduced. By replacing non-recyclable nonwoven fabric clothing hangers with paper hanger boxes, the use of nonwoven fabric was reduced by 3.5 tons.
Efforts are also being made to promote proper disposal methods. CJ ENM O Shopping Division’s ‘Eco Campaign Together’ guides consumers to properly separate and dispose of delivery boxes to facilitate recycling. Additionally, to encourage partner companies to participate in reducing packaging materials, a customized appropriate packaging standard guide was created for over 9,000 partners based on the Ministry of Environment’s packaging space ratio application standards. This is the first in the distribution industry.
Lim Jae-hong, head of customer service at CJ ENM O Shopping Division, said, “This award recognizes our efforts to create an eco-friendly culture by leading the consumption of eco-friendly packaging materials and encouraging participation from distributors and consumers. We will continue to do our best to fulfill our corporate social responsibility and provide differentiated customer experiences by establishing an eco-friendly packaging ecosystem.”
