‘Green Cup’ Appears in Busan Gwangalli... Said to Save Polar Bears Too

Dongseo University LINC+ Project Group Develops Reusable "Gonggi Nori" Cups with "Citizen Science Lab"

‘Green Cup’ Appears in Busan Gwangalli... Said to Save Polar Bears Too

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] “This cup is reusable. After use, you can return it to another cafe. This cup can even save polar bears.”

A ‘Green Cup’ has appeared to free Gwangalli Beach, a representative tourist attraction in Busan, from trash.

It is a ‘measure’ to save Gwangalli Beach, which has been suffering from plastic cups and other waste.

The Green Cup is a cup-sharing service planned with the purpose of using cups that can be used multiple times instead of disposable plastic cups and protecting the environment.

Currently, cafes Primo, Eric Wave, 24.7g, On Gime, and Lune Noir are participating in the Green Cup in the Gwangalli area of Busan, which attracts many tourists.

The service is available to anyone. All you have to do is visit a cafe partnered with Green Cup and request a Green Cup when ordering a drink.

As a bonus, you receive a beverage discount benefit for participating in environmental protection. Used cups are returned to partner cafes, collected by a cleaning company, and recycled again.

The emergence of the Green Cup is the result of collaboration among various organizations in the Busan area. First, the Busan Center for Creative Economy and Innovation discovered the local startup ‘Green Up’ through the Citizen Science Lab.

The Citizen Science Lab is a program that supports everything from problem discovery through living labs to planning and implementing solution services. It is a specialized support project of the Center for Creative Economy and Innovation that helps prospective entrepreneurs realize startups and existing entrepreneurs expand their business models.

The Dongseo University LINC+ Project Group took over the baton and provided support. They participated in the overall process from design to promotion to produce a well-structured and high-quality Green Cup.

They entrusted cup design to students of the College of Design, adding a youthful sensibility.

Before the service launch, the Green Cup will hold the ‘Green Cup Challenge.’ On the 21st at 1 p.m., around Gwangalli Beach, they will raise awareness about the use of disposable plastic cups and promote the Green Cup service.

A surprise event offering Green Cups and free coffee will also be prepared to encourage citizen participation. The Green Cup plans to start in the Gwangalli area of Busan and steadily expand its service area.

Kim Hyung-woo, head of the Dongseo University Regional Cooperation Center, said, “We will continuously promote campaigns in which citizens voluntarily participate, including environmental efforts.”
