Jeju Provincial Assembly Member Kim Hwang-guk Attends Briefing on Smart Traffic Safety System Introduction

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters (Jeju) Reporter Park Chang-won] Kim Hwang-guk, a member of the Culture, Tourism and Sports Committee of the Jeju Special Self-Governing Provincial Council (People Power Party, Yongdam 1·2-dong), attended the briefing and demonstration session for the introduction of the smart traffic safety system held on the 9th at the meeting room of Jeju Seo Elementary School.

The smart traffic safety system installed on the school route of Seo Elementary School is a project to establish the nation's first smart crosswalk (1 location) and facilities for monitoring restricted vehicles and preventing speeding (2 locations).

Assemblyman Kim said, “In the case of Jeju Seo Elementary School, restrictions on vehicles over 4.5 tons such as freight trucks and construction machinery during school commute times were implemented for the first time in the province in 2017, but since they were not well observed, this system was proposed.” He added, “Through this facility, I hope drivers will pay attention to safe driving and traffic regulations within the protection zone to ensure children's safety.”

The newly installed smart crosswalk system provides more functions to pedestrians and drivers than the voice-guided smart crosswalks installed in other protection zones in the province.

In particular, when the pedestrian signal is activated, the installed electronic display informs drivers of violations of the crosswalk stop line, and when the pedestrian signal is not active, it notifies illegal parking or stopping vehicles near the crosswalk through the electronic display or displays other disaster action guidelines.

Assemblyman Kim said, “No matter how many child traffic safety facilities are installed, the most important thing is the interest of the adults who drive.” He added, “Rather than installing more restricted zones and monitoring facilities, I hope to see more drivers voluntarily complying.”

Meanwhile, Assemblyman Kim Hwang-guk institutionalized restrictions on large freight vehicles during school commute times in the Seo Elementary School protection zone for the first time in the province during the 10th council, and in the April 381st regular session provincial government inquiry, he proposed to the autonomous police unit to monitor and supervise large freight vehicle traffic at Seo Elementary School.
