Professor Choi Junhyuk of Dongmyeong University Department of Interior Architecture Receives Busan Mayor's Commendation at Busan Library Opening Ceremony on the 4th
Planning of the Nation's First Three Metropolitan Representative Libraries... Busan Lib
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] Is this really a library? This is both an exclamation and praise poured out to the library’s ‘general planner.’
Professor Choi Jun-hyuk of Dongmyung University (Department of Interior Architecture) will receive a commendation from the Mayor of Busan at the opening ceremony of the ‘Busan Library,’ the first library operated by Busan City and Busan’s representative library, on November 4.
An award ceremony will be held at the opening. The commendation is for the ‘overall planning’ contribution that completed the concept of daily life (日常) and daily thoughts (日想) into a knowledge and cultural space.
Located near Exit 2 of Deokpo-dong Subway Station in Sasang-gu, Busan Library has a total floor area of 16,292.63㎡, with 2 basement floors and 4 above-ground floors, and will open on November 4.
It is the third newly constructed regional representative library in Korea since 2015, and the largest regional representative library in the country based on total floor area.
The library features 4 reading rooms and 11 specialized zones. The two basement floors house Busan’s largest preservation stacks, the first floor is divided into the Dream Terrace Children’s Reading Room and a lobby serving as the main hall.
The second floor includes Chaekmaru (General Reading Room 1), a multimedia zone, Sodambang (club room), and a gallery; the third floor consists of Chaeknuriteo (General Reading Room 2), Busan Aetteul (Busan Studies Reading Room), offices, and Busan Hakdang (lecture room); the fourth floor is composed of a book caf? and Baram Shelter (outdoor rooftop garden).
Busan Library is the first representative library established in the Busan area and was planned and completed as a knowledge and culture-based community-centered library by the general planner.
It is a 21st-century library that meets citizens’ daily lives and responds to the strengthening of reading culture policies, equipped with knowledge and cultural future competitiveness.
Additionally, it holds significance as a super library that serves as citizens’ living room and study, a platform for knowledge creation, and a source of imagination in everyday life.
Professor Choi said, “Busan Library has great significance as a growth-oriented library with a future-oriented library appearance.” He explained that it has value in hosting various COMMONS.
Professor Choi self-assessed, “It will be a perfect example of Korea’s first integrated spatial design, integrating all design elements such as interior space design, furniture design, and signage design.”
Experts in architectural culture evaluate that Busan Library embodies elegant and dignified design elements comparable to overseas libraries, and realizes the meaning of a knowledge and culture-centered library through user-centered operation, book services, and citizen communication-centered COMMONS.
There was a reason why he received a certificate from the ‘building owner’ at the opening ceremony.
Currently, Professor Choi has been appointed as the general planner for the representative libraries of three metropolitan local governments in Korea (Busan, Daegu, Ulsan), successfully completing his duties in Ulsan and Busan.
The reopened Yeonsan Library, Nam-gu Library, and Saha Library, remodeled under his guidance, also reflect Professor Choi’s ‘vision.’
He is currently serving as the general planner for the libraries under construction, Geumsaem Library and Suyeong-gu Library, drawing the future of library space design.
Professor Choi is recognized as a top expert in the library field, having also served as a consultant for public library construction and operation for the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and as an advisory committee member for the National Assembly Library.
