Gyeongbuk Province's Solution to a 20% Annual Decrease in Marriages... 'Sseomnam Sseomnyeo Club'

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Dong-wook] Gyeongsangbuk-do announced on the 1st that it organized the '2020 Some Nam Some Nyeo Club Integrated Workshop,' attended by 56 young men and women, hosted by the Daegu-Gyeongbuk branch of the Korea Population, Health and Welfare Association, over the weekend in Mungyeong and Gyeongju.

This workshop is a continuation of the 'Youth Men and Women Meeting Support (Club)' project conducted regionally since September in Pohang (cooking), Gumi (DIY workshop), Gyeongsan (sports), and Uiseong (craft beer workshop). Originally, an integrated workshop for four clubs was planned, but due to COVID-19 prevention measures, workshops were held separately for two clubs each.

On the 31st in Mungyeong, 32 members from the Gumi and Uiseong clubs spent time meeting as young men and women while walking through Mungyeong Saejae Ecological Maze Park and the loess road in an 'accompaniment of charming autumn scenery.'

On November 1st, 24 members from the Pohang and Gyeongsan clubs enjoyed an 'autumn foliage healing walk' in Gyeongju at Daereungwon and Hwangridan-gil, completing tasks to create team unity and memorable life shots. Participants reminisced by watching club activity videos and sharing impressions at the Ramada Hotel in Mungyeong and The K Hotel in Gyeongju.

Gyeongbuk Province's Solution to a 20% Annual Decrease in Marriages... 'Sseomnam Sseomnyeo Club'

Gyeongbuk Province, after differentiating couple events promoted by other cities through last year's 'Romantic Travel,' made a novel attempt this year to foster relationships through continuous meetings via 'club activities.'

As a result, Gyeongbuk proudly states that nearly twice as many single men and women applied compared to the planned number from the recruitment stage. Participants show over 90% attendance in clubs held every Saturday.

Lee Won-kyung, Director of the Gyeongbuk Province Women and Child Happiness Bureau, said, "Last year, 18,000 young people left Gyeongbuk, and in August this year, the number of marriages in Gyeongbuk decreased by 156 cases, or 21%, compared to the same month last year," adding, "We will actively strive to create a Gyeongbuk where youth return by discovering various population policies that can practically help young people."

Meanwhile, to promote a marriage- and childbirth-friendly social atmosphere, Gyeongbuk Province signed a business agreement last September with the Gyeongsangbuk-do Office of Education, labor unions of Gyeongbuk Province and the Office of Education, and Gayeon Marriage Information Co., Ltd. Recently, various policies have been introduced, including supporting romantic weddings for young couples using major attractions in Gyeongbuk.
