[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] According to USA Today on the 30th (local time), more than 230 federal election-related lawsuits have already been filed ahead of the US presidential election. The number of lawsuits is expected to increase further after the election on the 3rd of next month.

USA Today analyzed federal court data and found that the number of election-related lawsuits has exceeded 230 from January 1st of this year to the 23rd of this month.

Professor Richard Heison of the University of California, Irvine Law School, who has studied election-related lawsuits for over 30 years, mentioned that this year's number of election-related lawsuits is "setting a new record."

Most of the lawsuits have arisen in the context of a significant expansion of mail-in voting due to the spread of COVID-19. Representative cases include automatic sending of ballots, relaxation of eligibility requirements, and deadlines for ballot receipt.

With the recent appointment of Amy Coney Barrett as a federal Supreme Court justice, conservatives now hold an absolute majority on the Supreme Court, which is expected to increase the impact on election lawsuits.

USA Today reported, "The Supreme Court has played a significant role in election-related cases," and that with Justice Barrett's appointment, President Trump and the Republican Party have gained a much stronger advantage in the anticipated 'legal storm' following the election.
