[Asia Economy Reporter Donghyun Choi] The park and parking lot areas in the urban regeneration project in the Cheonyeon and Chunghyeon-dong areas of Seodaemun-gu, Seoul, will be expanded.
Seoul City announced on the 30th that it held the 8th Urban Regeneration Committee meeting and approved the original plan for the 'Cheonyeon and Chunghyeon-dong Urban Regeneration Activation Plan Amendment.' The Cheonyeon and Chunghyeon-dong Urban Regeneration Activation Area was selected as a Seoul-type urban regeneration activation area in 2017, designated as a Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) Urban Regeneration New Deal project area in 2018, and the urban regeneration activation plan was officially announced in November last year. Various projects are currently underway, including land acquisition and design for anchor facilities for the urban regeneration project, formation of village cooperatives for continuous community activities, and resident contest projects.
With this review, the issue of the park and parking lot areas being too narrow to install parking ramps is expected to be resolved. The city plans to expand the existing park, remodel the park above ground, and build an underground parking lot with 100 spaces. This is expected to alleviate parking difficulties in the nearby traditional market and low-rise residential areas, revitalize the market commercial district, improve the residential environment, and serve as a regional vitality hub in the future.
To amend the urban regeneration activation plan, the city has been carrying out procedures since May, including strategic plan changes, resident public hearings, opinion gathering from the Seodaemun-gu Council, advice from the Seoul Urban Regeneration Committee, and the MOLIT Urban Regeneration Special Committee. The matters approved as originally proposed by the committee will be officially announced in the Seodaemun-gu public notice in November, and efforts will be made to promote the project.
Yang Yongtaek, Director of Regeneration Policy Planning, said, “The amendment to the Cheonyeon and Chunghyeon-dong Urban Regeneration Activation Plan was made by collecting opinions from local residents and considering regional characteristics. We will continue to strive to ensure that necessary facilities are installed and that the urban regeneration project proceeds smoothly.”
