Opening of Hotel Shalom Jeju from October 30 to 31
Memory and Transmission of Jeju 4·3 Peace and Human Rights Education, Milestone of Jeju 4·3 Education
[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Park Chang-won] The Jeju 4·3 Peace Foundation (Chairman Yang Jo-hoon) will hold the '10th Jeju 4·3 Peace Forum' at Hotel Shalom Jeju from Friday the 30th to Saturday the 31st. This forum will feature presentations by eight experts from various fields under the theme 'Memory and Transmission of Jeju 4·3 Peace and Human Rights Education.'
According to the Jeju 4·3 Peace Foundation on the 29th, on the first day of the forum at 5 p.m., there will be a keynote lecture titled 'Jeju 4·3 Uprising and Historical Awareness' by Ahn Byung-wook, President of the Academy of Korean Studies and former chairman of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The opening ceremony will be held from 6:30 p.m. On the second day, the 31st (Saturday), the forum will be divided into three sessions. The first session, starting at 10:30 a.m., will focus on 'History Textbooks and 4·3 Education.' Professor Ko Dong-hwan (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology), Teacher Kim Byung-yoon (Inchang High School), and Director Choi Tae-sung (Byeolbyeol Korean History Research Institute) will each present on the standards for writing 4·3 descriptions in history textbooks and the changing perspectives on 4·3 according to curriculum changes. They will also discuss the significance and future improvements.
The second session, starting at 1:30 p.m. on the 31st, is themed 'Peace Education and Solidarity of Memory.' It includes a presentation by Professor Kang Soon-won (Hanshin University) on how education overcomes violent conflicts and moves toward reconciliation and peace, using the example of Northern Ireland as an overseas peace education case. Professor Lim Ji-hyun (Sogang University) will also present on 'How is Cross-Border Solidarity of Memory Possible?' exploring the possibility of grassroots memory solidarity across borders in the era of globalization.
The third session, starting at 3:20 p.m., under the theme 'Future Prospects of Peace and Human Rights Education,' will feature presentations by Professor Choi Ho-geun (Korea University), Teacher Jo Jeong-ah (Ilsan Dong High School), and Director Lee Dae-hoon (Peace Momo Peace/Education Research Institute). They will explore topics such as 'The Perspective of Jeju 4·3 as Peace Education and the Possibility of 4·3 Education' and 'Methods of Peace Education in the Era of COVID-19 and Climate Crisis.'
In addition to exploring the educational direction and future improvements of 4·3 content reflected in recently revised history textbooks, this 10th Jeju 4·3 Peace Forum aims to share the awareness of issues in Jeju 4·3 peace and human rights education conducted so far and to envision the proper generational transmission. It is expected to serve as a milestone for expanding the universal value of the 4·3 spirit moving toward coexistence and reconciliation.
The Jeju 4·3 Peace Foundation will comply with government quarantine guidelines due to COVID-19 by limiting the number of attendees at the venue.
