[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyemin] The People Power Party has decided to entrust the verification of candidates for the Seoul and Busan mayoral by-elections scheduled for April next year to the citizens. This is interpreted as a commitment to strictly verify morality and create candidates that meet the public's expectations.
The People Power Party's By-election Primary Preparation Committee held a meeting on the 29th and decided to separately establish and operate a Citizen Verification Committee within the Primary Preparation Committee.
The Citizen Verification Committee will be responsible for verifying whether candidates running for the Seoul and Busan mayoral by-elections have any disqualifications under party rules, abuse of power, sexual misconduct, bullying, or shameless behavior, among other inappropriate matters.
Along with this, the Primary Preparation Committee decided to conduct the by-election primaries in two stages: a preliminary primary and a main primary, limiting the number of candidates advancing to the main primary to five or fewer. In the preliminary primary, additional points will be awarded to women, youth, political newcomers, and persons with severe disabilities.
Furthermore, a citizen evaluation group will be formed and operated during the primary process. The Primary Preparation Committee stated, "Specific details will be discussed later."
