Opposition to Gwangju Military Airport Relocation to Muan, Mongtan-myeon Relay Participation

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Seo Young-seo] The Gwangju Combat Airfield Muan Relocation Opposition Pan-Citizen Countermeasure Committee (Chairman Park Moon-jae, hereinafter referred to as the Pan-Committee), along with the Mongtan-myeon Relocation Opposition Countermeasure Committee and the Village Chiefs' Council, held a joint rally opposing the relocation of the Gwangju Military Airport to Muan County in front of the Mongtan-myeon Office on the 26th.

According to Muan County on the 29th, during the event, the Pan-Committee explained the necessity of opposing the relocation of the Gwangju Combat Airfield to Muan, and the three organizations strongly expressed their opposition by jointly reading a resolution.

Park Moon-jae, the Standing Co-Chairman of the Pan-Committee, stated, “The law stipulates that the final relocation site must be decided through a referendum by the candidate local government residents and that the local government head must apply for the relocation.” He added, “If the village chiefs, who are the leading figures of local public opinion, unite in opposition to the military airport relocation as they did today and promote this to the village residents, we can prevent the relocation.”

Jang Yong-woo, the Mongtan-myeon Regional Chairman of the Pan-Committee, said, “Although the consent of the candidate site residents is essential, Gwangju City is unilaterally pushing forward the military airport relocation project without prior discussions, such as submitting a project proposal.” He emphasized, “The military airport relocation project, which infringes on the residents' right to survival and pursuit of happiness, stirs up regional conflicts and only increases confusion, must be immediately withdrawn.”
