Installation of Pedestrian Traffic Lights Near Myeongildong Food Alley and in Front of Godeokdong Lifelong Learning Center
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Jeong-hoon) has installed 'LED floor traffic lights' near the Myeongil-dong food alley, which has a high pedestrian population, and at the crosswalk in front of the Godeok-dong Lifelong Learning Center, to prevent pedestrian traffic accidents and create a safe walking environment. The installation is now in a pilot operation phase.
The 'LED floor traffic light' is a pedestrian assistance device made by installing LED panels on the ground at the crosswalk waiting line. It is linked with the pedestrian signal, so when the traffic light turns green, the floor LED panel also turns green simultaneously, allowing pedestrians to check the signal just by looking at the ground.
Additionally, its high visibility easily catches the pedestrian's eye, serving as a dual safety device to prevent traffic accidents, with its effect doubling at night.
This year, the district selected pilot installation sites through consultations with related organizations such as the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency and Gangdong Police Station, and on-site investigations, completed the construction, and began pilot operation of the LED floor traffic lights.
In particular, the LED floor traffic lights secure walking safety tailored to the eye level of vulnerable traffic groups such as wheelchair users, children, and the elderly. It is expected to be effective in preventing traffic accidents among pedestrians, including the so-called "smombie" group who walk while looking at their smartphones without paying attention to their surroundings.
Lee Jeong-hoon, Mayor of Gangdong-gu, said, "We are considering expanding the installation after monitoring the floor traffic lights in the future," and added, "We will continue to install floor traffic lights where children and pedestrian safety are needed and make every effort to prevent safety accidents."
