[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Jungnang-gu (Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi) libraries have been recognized for their excellence.
The district announced that Jungnang Forest Children's Library, located within the area, achieved the great honor of receiving the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Award on the 28th at the '2020 National Library Operation Evaluation.'
The National Library Operation Evaluation, conducted annually targeting public, school, military, prison, and specialized libraries nationwide, is designed to discover outstanding public libraries and share best practices to improve library services. This year, it was conducted across 2,309 institutions in five categories.
The evaluation proceeded in three stages: first, quantitative and qualitative assessments (library management, library services, human resources, information resources, facility environment, etc.); second, on-site inspections; and third, final judging. Jungnang Forest Children's Library competed in the public library category with 1,093 participating public libraries and earned the honor of winning with excellent scores in each judging phase.
Jungnang Forest Children's Library, as a children's library, runs various programs such as life-stage talent donation reading programs, YouTube production lectures, reading camps, and parent education lectures, receiving high praise from residents and standing as one of Jungnang-gu's representative libraries.
In this evaluation, the library received high marks for specialized projects including ▲‘Pre-school Thousand Book Reading,’ achieving reading 1,000 books by reading one book daily for three years from ages five to seven ▲‘Culture Day’ to expand residents' cultural enjoyment rights ▲‘Elementary Reading Discussion Group,’ jointly planned by library librarians and Jungnang-gu reading discussion leaders ▲‘Library Field Trips’ allowing experiential learning of efficient library use methods.
In particular, the representative specialized project and one of the Jungnang-gu Minseon 7th term vision projects, the ‘Pre-school Thousand Book Reading,’ is a program where children aged five to seven, who are entering the stage of being able to read books before school, read one book daily for three years to reach 1,000 books. Currently, 2,100 children, accounting for 26% of Jungnang-gu’s pre-school population, participate, with 36 having achieved the goal.
Lee Ji-yoo, director of Jungnang Forest Children's Library, said, “Jungnang Forest Children's Library has very high user satisfaction due to space configuration and specialized project planning tailored to life stages,” adding, “We will continue to do our best to provide the best reading culture services to local residents.”
Ryu Kyung-gi, mayor of Jungnang-gu, expressed gratitude, saying, “I thank Jungnang Forest Children's Library for their efforts to provide quality reading culture environments despite the difficulties caused by COVID-19,” and added, “We will actively support public libraries to perform various roles in the local community and become a foundation for knowledge and cultural development.”
