Korea-US Director-General Level Consultative Body to Continue Discussions on Promoting 'Alliance Dialogue'
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] On the morning of the 28th, Choi Jong-geon, First Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, spoke with Steven Biegun, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State, exchanging views on mutual interests including the Korea-U.S. relationship, the Korean Peninsula issue, and regional and international cooperation.
During the call, both sides reaffirmed their mutual support and trust in the strong Korea-U.S. alliance and agreed to manage bilateral issues between Korea and the U.S. in a stable manner.
In particular, based on mutual agreement on the necessity of the director-general level consultative body called the Alliance Dialogue (tentative name), which was discussed during Vice Minister Choi's visit to the U.S. last month, they agreed to continue consultations on the direction of promoting this consultative body.
Additionally, both sides closely discussed the election of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Director-General, where Yoo Myung-hee, Chief Trade Negotiator, has advanced to the final round and is competing against Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala from Nigeria.
Meanwhile, both sides agreed to maintain unwavering cooperation between Korea and the U.S. regardless of domestic political schedules, based on the strong trust between the Korea-U.S. leaders, and Vice Minister Choi invited Deputy Secretary Biegun to visit Korea within this year.
