Mayor Lee Yong-seop: "Gwangju is the Future City for Cycling"
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Gwangju Metropolitan City held a 'Field Listening Day' on the 27th at the first floor art stage of Pyeongdong Station to create a 'Pyeongdong Industrial Complex Lifestyle Bicycle Road.'
This 'Field Listening Day' was conducted under the chairmanship of Choi Young-tae, Chairman of the Citizens' Rights Committee, with the participation of Mayor Lee Yong-seop, Gwangsan District Mayor Kim Sam-ho, Gwangsan District Council members Lee Young-hoon, Park Hyun-seok, Guk Kang-hyun, Park Kyung-shin, Yoon Hye-young, Kim Jae-ho, citizens' rights committee members, and bicycle special committee officials.
Mayor Lee Yong-seop rode a bicycle together with citizens, moving from Woljeon Park to Pyeongdong Station to examine the conditions of the bicycle road, and then listened to citizens' opinions about the lifestyle bicycle road at Pyeongdong Station.
This 'Field Listening Day' is part of Gwangju City's plan to improve the existing aging bicycle roads and build a safe city for cycling. Following the first lifestyle bicycle road in the Sangmu district, the second lifestyle bicycle road will be created in the Pyeongdong Industrial Complex.
The Pyeongdong Industrial Complex was established in 1993 and, as of 2020, is an urban industrial complex with 634 companies employing about 13,800 people.
Until now, there have been several complaints that workers commuting by car illegally park on both sides of the road in the industrial complex area, making bicycle use inconvenient, and that the existing bicycle roads are aging and need improvement.
Mayor Lee Yong-seop said, "Gwangju Metropolitan City has presented the Gwangju-type AI-Green New Deal vision to realize a carbon-neutral energy self-sufficient city by 2045 this year," adding, "A safe city good for cycling is the direction Gwangju must take."
He continued, "If the Pyeongdong Industrial Complex area is developed as a pilot section for lifestyle bicycle roads, it will be connected with the bicycle roads of Songjeong Station and Hwangryong River and the subway at Pyeongdong Station, which will further activate bicycle use," adding, "The opinions raised today on site will be reviewed by the Citizens' Rights Committee and related departments to prepare implementation plans."
