[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Jeong Seunghyun] Mokpo City, Jeollanam-do announced on the 26th that it received the Prime Minister's Award, the highest prize in the comprehensive category, at the '2020 Korea Urban Awards' held at the National Land Development Exhibition Hall in Seoul.
The Korea Urban Awards, hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, is an evaluation conducted annually on 229 basic local governments nationwide. It was first introduced at the national level in 2000 to promote sustainable development and competitive urban policies among local governments.
This evaluation assessed 72 indicators across four categories: urban society, urban economy, urban environment, and support systems, through document review and presentation evaluation. Mokpo City received the highest award (Prime Minister's Award) as the top city among small and medium-sized cities in the comprehensive evaluation of the '2020 Korea Urban Awards.'
Mokpo City scored highly in all four categories, especially in the urban environment sector, where it was highly rated for excellent cases of urban regeneration and village creation, continuous improvements in pedestrian environments and promotion of bicycle use, and exemplary cases of low-carbon green city initiatives through the spread of eco-friendly transportation.
In particular, the city ranked first among small and medium-sized cities due to significant improvements in economic indicators, such as raising the occupancy rate of industrial complexes including the energy industry convergence complex through active corporate attraction.
Mayor Kim Jongsik said, "Winning the highest award at the 2020 Korea Urban Awards is an opportunity to externally recognize the sustainable urban development direction that Mokpo City is pursuing," and added, "We will continue to do our best to make Mokpo a sustainable city where citizens are happy and live well."
