Many Award-Winning Non-Curricular Ideas from Contest Implemented as Educational Programs

Shall We Live Without Carbon Emissions? ... Let's Open That Course Award ceremony for the extracurricular idea contest held at Pukyong National University.

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] “Shall we try living two days without carbon emissions?” The university readily accepted the educational program proposed by the students.

Pukyong National University (President Jang Young-soo) is attracting attention by deciding to launch a large number of educational programs proposed by students, such as the ‘Carbon Zero Camp’.

On the 26th, Pukyong National University announced that under the Future Education Innovation Headquarters, it will operate programs for students by actually launching the works awarded in the first extracurricular idea contest of the 2020 academic year.

The contest was held to provide students with the opportunity to design and propose extracurricular programs that enhance learning competencies, career and psychological counseling, employment and entrepreneurship, volunteering, and other areas outside of regular coursework.

Out of 57 programs submitted to the contest, 17 programs including the grand prize were selected and awarded after screening. From the 20th to the 23rd, the results were disclosed to internal administrative departments to survey their willingness to open the programs.

Each department showed interest by expressing their intention to open most of the programs, including the grand prize, excellence awards, merit awards, and honorable mentions.

The grand prize-winning program, ‘Everyday Earthday,’ is a camp program where participants live for 48 hours without carbon emissions. Over 48 hours, participants experience a lifestyle that minimizes carbon emissions through education on the sharing economy, vegan cooking, sustainable fashion, marine environmental protection, and more, aiming to raise awareness about the environment.

This program is scheduled to be launched and operated during this winter vacation under the supervision of the Student Welfare Division of the Student Affairs Office.

‘Hey, You Can Be a Writer Too,’ which strengthens writing skills through the experience of publishing students’ own stories as books, will also be launched.

Award-winning programs such as ‘Guide to Proper Living,’ which helps correct irregular lifestyles caused by COVID-19 and builds practical skills and confidence, and ‘Student-led Promotion Program B-Z,’ which promotes various useful school programs to foster a sense of belonging and achievement, will be launched one after another under the supervision of the Student Competency Development Center, Student Counseling Center, and Teaching and Learning Performance Center.

Chae Young-hee, head of the Future Education Innovation Headquarters at Pukyong National University, said, “Through this contest conducted as part of the University Innovation Support Project, we hope it becomes an opportunity for students to participate in programs they directly planned and to develop creative ideas and planning skills.”
