[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] On the 27th, Busan's Gijang-gun will conduct the 2020 Radiation Disaster Joint Drill, simulating a radiation leak accident at Shin-Kori Unit 2.
Gijang-gun, the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission, Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety, Korea Institute of Radiological & Medical Sciences, and related local organizations will participate extensively.
The joint drill is a legally mandated exercise that must be conducted at least once every two years by the local government in charge of the Radiation Emergency Planning Zone (EPZ) together with the nuclear power plant operator, according to Article 37 of the "Act on Protection of Nuclear Facilities and Measures for Radiation Disaster Prevention."
This drill will be conducted in two parts: a tabletop exercise (CPX) and a field exercise. The tabletop exercise will be centered on 13 collaborative working groups of the Regional Radiation Disaster Countermeasures Headquarters and will proceed according to the stages of the radiation emergency alert.
The field exercise will focus on the 29 villages closest within a 5km radius around the Kori Nuclear Power Plant. It will involve emergency alert broadcasting drills using the radiation emergency alert broadcasting network and multipurpose street broadcasting vehicles to disseminate emergency alert situations.
Busan City will establish a "Disaster Victim Relief Base Support Center" at Gangseo Sports Park, located more than 30km from the Kori Nuclear Power Plant, and conduct drills to transport relief supplies held by 16 districts, including Gijang-gun, to Gangseo Sports Park.
An environmental radiation survey drill covering the entire Busan area will also be conducted under the supervision of Busan City, with collaboration from specialized institutions and related local organizations, carried out comprehensively on land, sea, and air.
Gijang-gun stated, "This is an important drill to comprehensively prepare and respond to the resident protection measures system for radiation disaster prevention in the Kori Nuclear Power Plant area," and added, "On the morning of the drill day, radiation emergency alert broadcasts and sirens will be conducted twice for about 10 minutes targeting the area around the nuclear power plant, so we ask for residents' cooperation."
