Busan Suyeong-gu Awarded the Presidential Prize at the '2020 Korea Urban Awards'

[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Jiwon] Suyeong-gu, Busan City won the Presidential Award at the '2020 Korea Urban Awards.'


According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport on the 26th, Suyeong-gu, Busan received the 'Presidential Award,' Mokpo-si, Jeollanam-do received the 'Prime Minister's Award,' Seongdong-gu, Seoul received the 'Minister of Urban Regeneration Award,' Seosan-si, Chungcheongnam-do received the 'Minister of Long-term Unexecuted Facilities Resolution Award,' and Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul received the 'Minister of Green City Award.'


The Korea Urban Awards are given to local governments that achieve excellent results in evaluations of urban sustainability and living infrastructure levels.


Suyeong-gu, Busan, which received the Presidential Award, earned consistently high scores across all fields, ranking 1st in support systems, 2nd in the economic sector, 5th in the social sector, and 5th in the environmental sector.


In particular, by securing 13 times more national and city funds compared to the previous year through selection in public contests and awards from external organizations, and actively promoting the activation of the Urban Regeneration Support Center, the previously weak economic sector (16th → 2nd) and support system sector (6th → 1st) performances greatly improved.


Mokpo-si, Jeollanam-do, which won the Prime Minister's Award, ranked consistently high among small and medium-sized cities, placing 5th in support systems and 11th in the social sector. Through active corporate attraction, the occupancy rate of industrial complexes such as the Energy Industry Convergence Complex was raised to 71%, significantly improving economic indicators (33rd → 11th).


Seongdong-gu, Seoul, which received the Minister of Urban Regeneration Award, was highly evaluated for increasing the floating population by about 25,000 and increasing the number of resident companies by 968 through regional culture-specialized street projects such as the Handmade Shoes Street and Seongsu-dong Cafe Street.


Seosan-si, Chungcheongnam-do, which received the Minister of Long-term Unexecuted Facilities Resolution Award, was recognized for selecting 54 priority urban planning facilities and establishing an annual investment plan totaling 282.1 billion KRW by 2033.


Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul compensated 60.3 billion KRW for 8 out of 12 long-term unexecuted parks, and was especially praised for promoting each of the 12 parks as themed parks reflecting their unique characteristics.


In addition, Siheung-si, Gyeonggi-do; Jongno-gu, Seoul; Wanju-gun, Jeollabuk-do; Jinju-si, Gyeongsangnam-do; Seo-gu, Daejeon; Anseong-si, Gyeonggi-do; Uiwang-si, Gyeonggi-do; and Yangju-si, Gyeonggi-do also received ministerial awards.


Kim Hyun-mi, Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, said, "I appreciate the efforts of each local government to implement resident-participatory administration and secure sustainable and convenient living infrastructure under limited administrative capacity and financial conditions."
