"Planting Trees and Sending Hearts"... Mapo-gu Recruiting Participants for 'Village Planting Forest'

[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Mapo-gu (Mayor Yoo Dong-gyun) is recruiting participants for the ‘Village Planting Forest Creation Project,’ which helps residents create video letters containing special stories to send to family, friends, neighbors, and others.

This event, part of the district’s 5 million tree planting campaign, offers an opportunity to encourage family and friends struggling due to the impact of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) or to send congratulatory messages to acquaintances celebrating special occasions such as childbirth, birthdays, or promotions. Residents can create video letters with the help of a professional company in front of the trees they personally planted, then keep the videos or send them to the intended recipients to convey their feelings.

The tree planting event is organized by the 16 resident autonomy committees and resident autonomy councils of Mapo-gu’s neighborhoods, and it is unique in that it combines tree planting activities with messages exchanged between participants.

Especially in a situation where gatherings and travel have become more difficult due to COVID-19, this is a wholesome and meaningful activity that can be done in the nearby village green spaces, which has increased interest among Mapo-gu residents.

The district will accept residents’ stories until November 9. Each neighborhood’s resident autonomy (committee) will select up to 10 tree planting video letter stories, and the tree planting event is scheduled to take place from November 16 to 20.

Eligible participants are citizens who live, work, or attend school within Mapo-gu’s living area.

To apply, visit the resident autonomy committee or resident autonomy council at each neighborhood community center in Mapo-gu or submit by email (hyson@mapo.go.kr) by November 9, including the tree name, story, planter’s name, and contact information.

Mapo-gu, which is promoting the 5 million tree planting campaign, planted a total of 1,231 trees last year over about a month from October to November through this direct resident participation method.

Yoo Dong-gyun, Mayor of Mapo-gu, said, “This event is a meaningful opportunity to convey feelings to those struggling with COVID-19 or to acquaintances who cannot meet despite having reasons to celebrate, along with planting trees that promise the future. We hope many residents will participate.”
