[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Hyowon] In South America, Colombia has surpassed 1 million cumulative confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), becoming the eighth country to exceed 1 million confirmed cases.


According to major foreign media, Colombian health authorities announced on the 24th (local time) that the number of new daily COVID-19 cases was 8,769, bringing the cumulative total to 1,007,711.


This comes just over seven months since the first confirmed case was reported on March 6. On the same day, 198 deaths were reported, bringing the total death toll to 30,000. Colombia's population is approximately 50 million.


In South America, Argentina was the first to surpass 1 million confirmed cases on the 19th, followed by Colombia as the second.


According to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University in the U.S., cumulative confirmed cases in other South American countries such as Peru and Mexico are also rapidly increasing, with approximately 886,000 and 883,000 cases respectively. Experts predict that these countries will also exceed 1 million confirmed cases within weeks.


Meanwhile, according to the international statistics site Worldometer, the country with the highest number of confirmed cases is the United States (approximately 8,827,000), and a total of eight countries including India, Brazil, Russia, Spain, and France have surpassed 1 million cases.
