[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Eun-young] The nest of the hornet, known as the "murder hornet," which had terrorized the entire United States, has been discovered for the first time. This species is known to be an invasive species that came from Asia. The Department of Agriculture announced plans to remove trees to eliminate the hornet's nest.
According to foreign media, on the 23rd (local time), entomologists from the Washington State Department of Agriculture discovered the nest of the Asian giant hornet on private property in the town of Blaine for the first time. Initially, the research team attached tracking devices to several hornets caught using a new type of trap and released them. After tracking the flying hornets, they found a hive built in a tree hole, where dozens of hornets were discovered.
Foreign media reported that this is the first time the habitat of the Asian giant hornet has been found. An insect expert reportedly stated, "The Asian giant hornet can kill an entire honeybee hive within a few hours."
Meanwhile, in Korea, the Asian giant hornet, also called Jangsu hornet, is known as the "murder hornet" across the United States and has become an unwelcome guest for farms. The nickname "murder hornet" was given because it attacks not only honeybees but also humans, sometimes resulting in death. Last year, a farm in the U.S. suffered damage when 60,000 honeybees were found dead with their heads severed.
The route by which this hornet landed in Washington State from Asia is still unknown among researchers. However, recently, the species has also been found in British Columbia, Canada, and is rapidly spreading in the Pacific Northwest coastal region.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced plans to remove trees to eliminate the discovered hornet nest. They have been tracking the nests of the Asian giant hornet to protect native honeybees.
