Suncheon City, Urban Agriculture Community Gatmul Kimchi Sharing Event at Elderly Care Facility

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Suncheon City (Mayor Heo Seok) harvested agricultural products produced at the Shindae Urban Garden located in Shindae-ri, Haeryong, on the 23rd together with members of the urban agriculture community and made 100kg of Gatmul Kimchi to deliver to the elderly care facility Songgwang Silver House.

The ingredients for Gatmul Kimchi, including gat (mustard greens), green onions, and radishes, were grown using eco-friendly farming methods in the educational garden within the Shindae Urban Garden. Although these were cultivated for children's harvesting experience, due to the spread of COVID-19, the harvesting experience was replaced with the Suncheon-style Kwonbun Movement and will be served on the tables of the elderly.

Last Chuseok, Suncheon City's urban agriculture community harvested 100kg of sweet potatoes and delivered them to elderly welfare facilities, practicing sharing through urban agriculture.

Members of four urban agriculture community groups (Gardener Farmers, Urban Farmers Ihwa, Suncheon Ecological Urban Agriculture Community, Suncheon City Urban Agriculture Research Association) participated in this sharing event to contribute and strive to realize the value of urban agriculture by promoting a culture of donation through urban agriculture.

A Suncheon City official said, “We are grateful to the members of the urban agriculture community who participated in sharing for neighbors in need.” He added, “This year, the unusually long rainy season caused vegetable prices to rise, making it burdensome to make kimchi. We hope this Gatmul Kimchi sharing activity will help those in need even a little and expect the culture of sharing through urban agriculture to be revitalized.”
