The Only Domestic 'Moorim Paper KOREAN CUP Paper Airplane Competition'
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Jong-hwa] The 'Moorim Paper KOREAN CUP Paper Airplane Competition' (hereinafter 2020 Moorim Paper Paper Airplane Challenge), hosted by Moorim Paper, a leading domestic printing paper specialist company, will be held this year in a non-face-to-face format through online participation.
Due to concerns over mass infections caused by the spread of COVID-19, the event adopted an 'Ontact (Online + Untact)' method, making it the first paper airplane e-sports event in Korea.
The '2020 Moorim Paper Paper Airplane Challenge' consists of two categories: 'Longest Flight Time,' which measures flight duration, and the 'Boomerang Challenge,' where participants throw a paper airplane and catch it upon its return. Participants can take on the challenge individually from any comfortable location, record their attempts on video, and upload the videos with the required hashtags to their personal SNS and the official competition website.
Any Korean citizen can apply and participate, and the first 500 applicants will receive a challenge kit box (including 20 official folding papers, 2 protective masks, and 2 folding cards). All participants who upload their challenge videos will receive a small prize (GS25 mobile coupon). The deadline for video submissions is December 6.
The prizes have also been enhanced. The top six record holders in each category of the Longest Flight Time event will receive prizes worth a total of 1.8 million KRW along with a free pass ticket to next year’s paper airplane competition Longest Flight Time finals. In the Boomerang Challenge category, the top 10 best challengers selected based on creativity and flight performance will receive prizes worth a total of 1 million KRW and a free pass ticket to next year’s aerobatic flight finals. Additionally, 50 participants will be selected weekly by lottery to receive generous prizes.
A Moorim Paper official stated, "Since the challenge locations and conditions vary for each participant in the 2020 Moorim Paper Paper Airplane Challenge, we changed it from an official competition to a challenge event to ensure fairness. Holding it online has expanded accessibility beyond regional limitations. We aim to provide an opportunity for families and friends to enjoy and participate without burden during the constrained daily life caused by COVID-19."
In particular, the Boomerang Challenge, where participants throw and catch the paper airplane, was planned as a participatory donation challenge that the general public can enjoy. When participants finally upload their videos, Moorim’s eco-friendly 'Neofore' paper cups will be donated. For each video, 10 paper cups will be donated, and after the challenge ends, the cups will be donated to medical staff or public institutions related to COVID-19. Since there are no special restrictions on the challenge process, a variety of challenge videos from participants are anticipated.
Lee Do-gyun, CEO of Moorim Paper, said, "Moorim’s paper airplane competition is the only official competition in Korea. While sharing the joy of paper, we wanted to fulfill the social responsibility of a paper company, so this year we are holding it in an Ontact format. Although COVID-19 is spreading, we wanted to provide an opportunity for many people to experience new enjoyment through paper. We look forward to many challenges with this new attempt."
More detailed information about the 2020 Moorim Paper Paper Airplane Challenge is available on the official competition website. Guide videos on folding and flying methods introduced by the national paper airplane representative team 'WePlay' are also provided, allowing anyone to easily follow and participate. Inquiries can also be made through the KakaoTalk channel (search name: Moorim Paper).
Meanwhile, the Moorim Paper KOREAN CUP Paper Airplane Competition is the only official paper airplane competition in Korea that tests skills in distance flying, longest flight time, and aerobatic flight categories. It is held annually in Jinju City, Gyeongnam Province, and the top record holders receive an official champion record certificate issued by the Korea Paper Airplane Association. Last year’s competition attracted about 3,000 participants nationwide and concluded successfully, establishing itself as a legitimate official sports event.
