[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Dongjak-gu (Mayor Changwoo Lee) will hold the Youth Autonomous Policy Market (hereinafter Policy Market) online at 10 a.m. on November 7 in the district office meeting room.

This event was prepared to provide an opportunity for youth to participate throughout the policy process by delivering policies directly discovered and proposed by Dongjak-gu youth council members to actual policy decision-makers.

Last year, a total of 12 policies were proposed, and four were reflected as Dongjak-gu policies in 2020, including ▲installation of protective fences near schools ▲installation of anti-slip handrails and stairs on steep hills ▲creation of safe routes to school ▲installation of cleanliness signboards.

This year, a total of 40 people, including 35 members of the 6th Dongjak-gu Youth Council and 5 youth advisors, will participate in the Policy Market, sharing the sales results of youth-proposed policies online through a video conferencing application.

Earlier, the district conducted an ‘online voting and opinion collection on resident empathy for each policy’ through the Youth Council last month.

Policies that gained empathy from various social and age groups include ▲24-hour opening of youth reading rooms and installation of CCTV ▲support for installing ID verification machines at alcohol and tobacco sales stores near schools ▲creation of student-led smoke-free school routes in all local schools within three years.

In addition, 15 agenda items in four areas closely related to youth life?▲education ▲culture ▲safety ▲human rights?will be introduced at this Policy Market.

From October 26 to 31, the district will send promotional materials introducing the 15 policies proposed by youth to the mayor, district council chairman, and other policy decision-makers and conduct a ‘Youth Proposed Policy Sale.’

Policy decision-makers will review the feasibility of the proposed policies, select them, and finalize the purchase by signing a policy implementation agreement and filming a support message video.

Depending on the results of the Policy Market operation, the Youth Council plans to continuously monitor whether policies are reflected and strive to ensure they lead to practical policies.

For more details, contact the Education Policy Division.

Jongrok Jeong, head of the Education Policy Division, said, “Through this Policy Market operation, we will realize youth participation rights, activate autonomous activities, and provide opportunities for youth to create their own future.”

Since September, the district has been producing nine youth career and academic video contents under the theme ‘Nine Stories by Youth Advisors’ and plans to continuously provide them through the Dongjak Innovation Education District YouTube channel.
