Discussion on Mutual Interests at the UN Peacekeeping Ministers Meeting and Others
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] On the 22nd, Jeong Byeong-ha, Director of the International Organizations Bureau at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, held a virtual consultation with James Kariuki, Director of the Multilateral Policy Bureau at the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, to discuss cooperation on international organization elections between Korea and the UK.
Through this consultation, both sides discussed ways to enhance bilateral cooperation on the international stage, including UN-level COVID-19 response cooperation, cooperation on elections for international organizations such as the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the UN Security Council, as well as mutual interests like preparations for the UN Peacekeeping Ministerial.
In particular, the Korean side explained the government's efforts to host the 4th UN Peacekeeping Ministerial next year and requested active cooperation from the UK side, which will serve as the co-chair country of next year's ministerial and was the host of the 1st meeting, during the event preparation process.
In response, the UK side stated that based on their experience hosting the 1st meeting, they will closely cooperate with Korea to ensure the successful hosting of next year's meeting. Additionally, both Korea and the UK agreed to hold regular consultations in the future to strengthen bilateral cooperation on major international issues and peacekeeping-related fields.
