Laundry Owner Sentenced to Probation for Secretly Filming Female College Student Changing Clothes

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bong-ju] A laundry shop owner who repeatedly committed illegal filming after asking a woman to change clothes, saying "the measurements must be taken accurately," was sentenced to a suspended prison term.

On the 22nd, Judge Baek Seung-jun of the Daejeon District Court Criminal Division 8 sentenced A (57), the laundry shop owner who was arrested and indicted on charges of violating the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes (filming using a camera, etc.), to one year in prison with a three-year suspension. He was also ordered to undergo one year of probation, 160 hours of community service, 40 hours of sexual violence treatment lectures, and a three-year employment ban at institutions related to children and adolescents.

According to the legal community, A, who operated a laundry shop near a university in Sejong City, secretly filmed a woman in her 20s who came to have her pants altered with a smartphone after requesting her to change clothes, saying "the measurements must be checked accurately" around May.

It was investigated that A filmed women changing clothes in the same manner about 20 times since March of last year. It was confirmed that many of the victims were female university students.

After the incident surfaced, A closed the laundry shop.

The court stated, "The nature of the crime is not good, and it seems the victims suffered considerable psychological shock," but also said, "We considered the deep remorse shown, cooperation with the investigation, and the fact that some of the crimes were attempted but not completed in sentencing."

A, who was in detention, was released following this ruling, and the prosecution appealed, arguing that "the sentence is too light."
