Award Ceremony at 5·18 Memorial Culture Center on the 27th at 4 PM... Live Broadcast on YouTube
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The May 18 Memorial Foundation announced on the 21st that the Gwangju Human Rights Award ceremony will be held at 4 p.m. on the 27th at the May 18 Memorial Culture Center Democracy Hall.
This year's 2020 Gwangju Human Rights Award ceremony will be broadcast live on the May 18 Memorial Foundation's YouTube channel.
This year's Gwangju Human Rights Award recipient, Bedjo Untung (Indonesia), will participate in the ceremony via a dual live broadcast from Indonesia instead of attending in person, in cooperation with COVID-19 response guidelines.
The event is specially planned to commemorate both the 40th anniversary of the May 18 Democratic Movement and the 21st anniversary of the Gwangju Human Rights Award simultaneously.
The theme is composed to show solidarity from the May 18 Democratic Movement to this year's human rights award recipient country, Indonesia.
Under the direction of Artistic Director Im Dongchang, all music used in the ceremony will be performed live.
The newly arranged "March for the Beloved," along with "Moment of Silence Music for the May 18 Spirits" and the "Gwangju Human Rights Award Theme Music," will be performed as a collaboration between traditional Korean music (gugak) and orchestra.
As a special event, Bedjo Untung and the orchestra will perform the Indonesian folk song "Genjer Genjer" together.
Genjer Genjer was banned in Indonesia until 1998 due to political agitation, making this joint performance especially meaningful. Toward the end of the ceremony, a specially composed tribute music honoring this year's recipient will also be unveiled.
