Nowon-gu Choansan Ceramic Workshop Officially Opens for Hands-on Experience

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Nowon-gu (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) will officially operate the Choansan Ceramic Experience Center located in Wolgye-dong starting from the 22nd.

The Choansan Ceramic Experience Center, built in December last year for residents' healing and various leisure activities, covers an area of 278.88m² and is located near Choan 1st Complex Apartments in Wolgye 2-dong.

It is equipped with two experience rooms, an exhibition room, and a kiln room for firing ceramics. The center is managed and instructed by one director and two instructors.

Ceramic experiences are operated by reservation through the district's website. Applications for the next month's programs are accepted from 10 a.m. on the 9th of each month. The programs include regular classes on a monthly basis and occasional classes for one-day experiences. Regular classes are divided into children’s, elementary, office workers’, and adult classes. Children’s and elementary classes are held on Saturdays, office workers’ classes on Friday evenings, and adult classes on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons. One-day experiences, which allow families and friends to bond, are available only on weekends, and reservations for infant groups are possible on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.

The completed ceramics made by participants go through a process of drying, firing, glazing, and cooling over about a month, after which they can be picked up in person or received by delivery.

Looking at the main programs by class, the children’s class focuses on sensory experiences including making small items and drawing with natural materials to promote sensory and cognitive development, while the adult class consists of experiences making items such as tableware, cups, flowerpots, and plates. Continued education allows participants to progress from basic skills to expert levels.

The tuition fee for one-day experiences is 15,000 KRW per person, and 10,000 KRW for infant groups. Monthly tuition fees for regular classes are 40,000 KRW for children and elementary students, and 60,000 KRW for adults and office workers. Discounts are available for seniors (65 years and older), persons with disabilities, and families with three or more children according to the tuition reduction criteria.

Surrounding the ceramic experience center are a lawn plaza, a park including a science playground for children, and walking trails.

Until now, the ceramic experience center has conducted non-face-to-face programs for COVID-19 self-quarantined individuals. For those interested, ceramic experience kits were delivered, and after following the production instructions or videos to make ceramics, the items were collected, fired, and then delivered. The November program was fully booked within 30 minutes of opening reservations, showing high interest from residents.

The opening ceremony will be held at 4 p.m. on the 22nd.

Mayor Oh Seung-rok said, “Experiencing clay not only helps children but also adults to soothe negative emotions and fosters creative thinking,” adding, “We will do our best to operate programs for residents’ leisure and mental healing.”
