[Asia Economy Reporter Kwangho Lee] According to data received by Yang Kyungsuk, a member of the National Assembly's Planning and Finance Committee from the Democratic Party of Korea, from the Korea Minting and Security Printing Corporation, there have been 824 cyberattacks over the past five years since 2016. The number of cyberattacks has been increasing every year, with 435 incidents occurring last year alone.
The Minting Corporation stated that there was no actual damage despite the cyberattacks, but it cannot be ruled out that attackers are continuously attempting to find vulnerabilities in security.
In particular, upon checking the IPs that attempted the cyberattacks, the United States accounted for the highest number with 226 cases, and domestic IPs also accounted for as many as 93 cases.
However, the Minting Corporation has not confirmed cyberattacks attempted through detours via other countries, indicating a lack of more precise detection.
Representative Yang pointed out, "If the Minting Corporation's information network is actually hacked, it could lead to serious consequences such as the leakage of technologies that can be used for crimes like counterfeit currency and ID card production," and added, "Strengthened security programs and management operations for the Minting Corporation's information network are urgently needed."
