Mrs. Ko Joo-rang, mother of traditional Korean musician Lee Hee-moon, and Mrs. Kim Mi-yeon, mother of singer Jo Yong-jin (Ali), will receive the Distinguished Parents of Artists Award (Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Commendation). The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced on the 18th that this year’s 30th Distinguished Parents of Artists Award recipients include Mrs. Ko Joo-rang, Mrs. Kim Mi-yeon, Mrs. Kim Mi-soon, mother of sculptor Yang Hye-kyu, Mrs. Kim Cho-ja, mother of poet Na Hee-deok, and Mrs. Jeon Su-bok, mother of theater director Moon Sam-hwa. The Distinguished Parents of Artists Award was established in 1991 to express respect and gratitude to parents who have raised their children to become outstanding artists.
Mrs. Ko Joo-rang is a master of Gyeonggi minyo (folk songs). She raised her son Lee Hee-moon as a holder of the National Intangible Cultural Property No. 57, Gyeonggi minyo. Lee received the Minyo Award at the 2014 KBS Gugak Awards and the Young Artist of Today Award (Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Commendation) the following year. Mrs. Kim Mi-yeon’s daughter, Jo Yong-jin, debuted as a singer in 2005. She has released numerous albums including “Village with a Soul” and won awards such as the Grand Prize at the Hong Kong Asian Pop Music Festival. In 2018, she joined the cultural delegation for the inter-Korean summit and performed in Pyongyang. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism described Mrs. Kim as having “provided her daughter with opportunities for cultural diversity and instilled confidence, raising her not only in skill but also in character as a well-rounded singer.”
Poet Na Hee-deok
Novelist Mrs. Kim Mi-soon had a significant influence on the foundational thoughts behind concepts such as household and community, which are themes in her daughter Yang Hye-kyu’s works. Yang, a professor at the St?delschule Art Academy in Frankfurt, Germany, creates complex sculptures and large-scale installations using everyday and indigenous materials. Na Hee-deok, who debuted in 1989, is a poet who has swept awards including the Kim Soo-young Literary Award, Isan Literary Award, Baekseok Literary Award, and Young Artist of Today Award. Her major poetry collections include “To the Roots,” “That Word Colored the Front,” and “Wild Apple.” The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism explained that Mrs. Kim Cho-ja, her mother, “deeply influenced Na’s values and literary attitude through a Puritan life and service.”
Moon Sam-hwa is the director of the Seoul Municipal Theater at Sejong Center for the Performing Arts. She debuted as a director in 2003, translating nineteen plays and directing eleven, including “Praying Mantis,” “Laibang,” and “Seven Housewives.” The Ministry described Mrs. Jeon Su-bok, who raised her, as “silently supporting her daughter even in old age and awakening her to life’s direction.”
