National Institute of Ecology Publishes Orchidaceae Plant Management Guidebook... Introducing Characteristics and Management Methods of 120 Species

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bo-kyung] The National Institute of Ecology announced on the 18th that it will publish the "Orchidaceae Plant Management Guide," which introduces the ecological characteristics and management techniques of 120 species of Orchidaceae plants.

The Orchidaceae Plant Management Guide includes 120 species with high horticultural and ecological value, such as Dendrobium and Cattleya, selected from the 558 species of Orchidaceae plants held by the National Institute of Ecology.

The guide introduces the plants with photographs and presents cultivation management methods suitable for indoor and greenhouse environments in Korea, based on past research and management experience.

It also details management tips such as flowering information in greenhouse environments, appropriate humidity, light, pest sensitivity, and soil composition.

Orchidaceae is a perennial herb with the highest species diversity among angiosperms. It is a plant group widely distributed worldwide with over 25,000 species, and its flower shapes and fragrances make it popular among plant enthusiasts.

However, due to indiscriminate collection and habitat destruction, the population has rapidly declined, and all Orchidaceae plants are internationally protected under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

In Korea, among 88 terrestrial plants designated as endangered wild species, 11 species including Gwangneung Yoggang Flower, Geumjaran, and Nado Pungran are classified as Grade 1 and are protected.

This guide will be distributed free of charge from early November to major domestic libraries, including botanical gardens, arboretums, and plant research institutions. The full text will be available in image file (PDF) format on the National Institute of Ecology website starting from the 19th.
