[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Eun-young] It has been revealed that the group of taxi drivers accused of sexually assaulting a heavily intoxicated female passenger are suspected of three additional related crimes.
On the 16th, Gwangju Gwangsan Police Station arrested taxi drivers Mr. A (37) and Mr. B (34) on charges of violating the Special Act on the Punishment of Sexual Crimes. Mr. C (23), who handed over the intoxicated female passenger to Mr. A and others, was also booked without detention on the same charges.
They are accused of sexually assaulting and illegally filming the intoxicated female passenger.
In the early morning of the 9th, Mr. C picked up a female passenger in the Sangmu district of Gwangju. After confirming that the female passenger was heavily intoxicated, Mr. C shared this information using a group call app used by fellow taxi drivers.
Mr. A and Mr. B then joined, and they took the female passenger to her home and sexually assaulted her in turn. They also illegally recorded the crime scenes on their mobile phones.
The victim’s friends filed a missing person report, leading to the urgent arrest of Mr. A and his group that same morning.
Subsequently, during a digital forensic investigation of Mr. C’s mobile phone, it was discovered that they had committed similar crimes about three times in May of last year.
The police stated, "After seizing the mobile phone and restoring deleted data, we found photos taken in the same manner," and are investigating whether they deliberately approached intoxicated women while driving taxis late at night.
Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that Mr. A and his group have no criminal records that would restrict their employment as taxi drivers.
