Busan Haeundae Police Station Arrests 30s Drunk Driver for 60km Hit-and-Run at Station
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] A man in his 30s who fled after causing a drunk driving accident was caught after stopping by the police station restroom to urgently relieve himself.
According to Busan Haeundae Police Station on the 16th, at around 7:30 p.m. on the 15th, an on-duty officer found Mr. A coming out of the police station restroom toward the parking lot and conducted a breathalyzer test, which showed Mr. A's blood alcohol concentration was at the license suspension level.
After drinking, Mr. A drove a passenger car from Changnyeong, Gyeongnam, via the Namhae Expressway to the parking lot of Busan Haeundae Police Station.
The reason Mr. A parked at Haeundae Police Station was to use the restroom.
When loud music was coming from the car with the engine running, blocking the passage in the police station parking lot, the on-duty officer was looking for the driver and found Mr. A coming out of the first-floor restroom.
The police smelled alcohol on Mr. A and questioned him, but he initially denied driving, then said, "I drank a little about 8 hours ago and stopped by the restroom because I needed to urinate."
The police arrested Mr. A after the breathalyzer test showed a blood alcohol concentration at the license suspension level.
During the investigation, when the police asked about the damaged front bumper of the vehicle, Mr. A again denied the accident.
The police investigated whether any traffic accident reports had been filed with each police station along the vehicle’s route and the highway patrol, and additionally confirmed that Mr. A had fled after running a red light following a traffic accident in the jurisdiction of Changnyeong Police Station, Gyeongnam.
Haeundae Police Station stated, "After completing the drunk driving investigation on Mr. A, his custody will be transferred to the hit-and-run investigation team at Changnyeong Police Station."
