[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heung-soon] Twenty tourist sites across eight regions, including Goyang-si in Gyeonggi, Gangneung-si in Gangwon, Chungju-si in Chungbuk, Gunsan-si, Iksan-si, and Sunchang-gun in Jeonbuk, Suncheon-si in Jeonnam, and Daegu Metropolitan City, were selected on the 13th as recipients of the '2021 Open Tourism Site Development Project' supported by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Tourism Organization.
The Open Tourism Site Development Project aims to renovate and improve existing tourist sites and develop experiential content that everyone can enjoy, enabling mobility-vulnerable groups such as people with disabilities, the elderly, and families with infants and young children to travel conveniently and safely.
Starting this year, to allow sufficient time for renovation and for local governments to secure local funds, the project sites for next year were selected in advance to ensure smooth project implementation within the period.
The selected tourist sites will undergo customized on-site consultations by experts to finalize detailed improvement plans, after which design and construction related to renovation will be actively pursued from next year. Additionally, to promote open tourism sites and expand travel opportunities for vulnerable groups domestically, sharing trips will be conducted allowing these groups to visit the completed open tourism sites. Education on barrier-free tourism will also be provided to tourism workers and local government officials.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced plans to strengthen information accessibility by establishing an integrated online portal for barrier-free tourism information, providing details such as slope information of major tourist sites nationwide, installation of restrooms for people with disabilities, and availability of wheelchair rentals.
