[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Je-hoon] T'way Air is launching a cargo business utilizing in-flight seats, becoming the first domestic low-cost carrier (LCC) to do so.
T'way Air announced on the 13th that it will start an air cargo business by loading cargo onto in-flight seats, beginning with the Vietnam Ho Chi Minh route in early next month.
In response to a decline in passenger demand, T'way Air has been preparing the in-flight seat cargo business for several months to secure new revenue sources. Recently, it also received approval from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
Two out of the 27 B737-800 aircraft owned by T'way Air will be deployed for this business. According to the company, this method, approved by authorities, does not require aircraft modification, allowing for quick adaptation to changes in the travel market.
According to T'way Air, in-flight cargo loading is done by securing cargo on seats using flame-retardant covers and tie-down straps approved by relevant agencies. Additionally, a cabin cargo safety manager boards the aircraft to regularly inspect and manage the loaded cargo.
T'way Air plans to expand the business to neighboring countries depending on market conditions, starting with the Vietnam Ho Chi Minh route. The cargo to be loaded includes non-hazardous raw materials such as fabric, accessories, electronic components, as well as finished products like clothing and electronics.
A T'way Air official stated, "We have prioritized safety and thoroughly prepared personnel and equipment to operate the newly launched in-flight cargo transport business," adding, "We will continue to improve profitability through various business models."
