According to U.S. media such as USA Today on the 8th (local time), the Commission on Presidential Debates decided to change the debate format in consideration of the circumstances surrounding President Donald Trump's infection with the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

The town hall format originally planned to be held in Miami, Florida will be maintained, but the candidates will not attend in person.

There had been controversy over whether the second presidential candidate debate could take place due to President Trump's COVID-19 diagnosis. Although President Trump expressed a strong willingness to participate in the debate despite COVID-19, Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden stated, "If President Trump is still infected with COVID-19, we cannot hold the debate."
