Office of Assemblymen Han Byung-do and Kim Young-bae: 6 of the Top 10 Nationwide Traffic Accident Spots in the Past 3 Years Are in 'Seoul'
[Asia Economy Reporter Jo In-kyung] Over the past three years, the location with the highest number of traffic accidents nationwide during the Chuseok holiday period was the "Truck Terminal Front Intersection" in Yangjae-dong, Seocho-gu, Seoul.
According to data submitted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and the Korea Road Traffic Authority for the National Assembly audit, provided by Han Byung-do, a member of the National Assembly's Public Administration and Security Committee from the Democratic Party of Korea, a total of 12 traffic accidents occurred at the Truck Terminal Front Intersection during the Chuseok holidays from 2017 to 2019, resulting in 30 injuries. This was the highest number of accidents during this period.
Following this, the area near Keunmaeul Intersection in Dunsan-dong, Seo-gu, Daejeon (9 accidents, 16 injuries) ranked second, while areas near Gongpyeong-ro 47 in Jung-gu, Daegu (9 accidents, 13 injuries), Saegil Market Entrance in Naedang-dong, Seo-gu, Daegu (8 accidents, 2 deaths, 10 injuries), and near OK Animal Hospital in Munheung-dong, Buk-gu, Gwangju (7 accidents, 1 death, 7 injuries) ranked third to fifth respectively.
Representative Han emphasized, "For sections where traffic accidents continuously occur, a thorough cause analysis is necessary," adding, "Above all, it is essential to strengthen publicity about accident-prone areas so that drivers remain vigilant during the Chuseok holiday period."
On the other hand, the location with the highest number of traffic accidents throughout the year nationwide was the "Yeongdeungpo Rotary" in Seoul.
Analysis of data submitted by the Korea Road Traffic Authority to Kim Young-bae, a member of the Public Administration and Security Committee from the Democratic Party of Korea, showed that from 2017 to 2019, 164 traffic accidents occurred in this area alone, resulting in 219 injuries. This is the highest number of traffic accidents in any region over the past three years. The area has a complex traffic system with six intersections and seven crosswalks intertwined, which is considered to increase the risk of accidents.
Among the top 10 accident-prone areas, nine were four-way intersections or crossroads, and six of the ten were located in Seoul. The Sinsa Station intersection in Gangnam-gu ranked second with 127 accidents, including one death in 2017 and 164 injuries.
Following these were Suwon Station Plaza intersection, Yeomgok Intersection in Seocho-gu, and Jukjeon Intersection in Daegu, all included in the national traffic accident rankings.
Representative Kim stressed, "Focused management of accident-prone areas, improvement of traffic signal systems, and simplification of intersections are necessary efforts to reduce accidents," adding, "Since deaths and injuries continue to occur in the same areas, fundamental countermeasures are needed."
