Gwangju City Awarded Best for Three Consecutive Years in Local Government Job Policy Evaluation

Mayor Lee Yong-seop: "We Will Lead Job Innovation in Digital, Green, and Human New Deals"

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 29th that it won the ‘Grand Prize’ in the 2020 National Local Government Job Policy Comprehensive Evaluation, being selected for the third consecutive year as the local government with the best job policies nationwide.

The ‘National Local Government Job Award’ is a comprehensive evaluation of job policies conducted by the Ministry of Employment and Labor targeting local governments nationwide (17 metropolitan and 226 basic local governments).

Since 2012, the Ministry of Employment and Labor has organized this award annually to encourage excellent local governments and disseminate outstanding job policies nationwide by evaluating the excellence and execution performance of local governments’ job creation plans through in-depth assessments including document reviews and interviews by job experts.

This award is evaluated as the result of Mayor Lee Yong-seop placing job creation as the top priority goal of the 7th term of the elected administration and mobilizing all regional capabilities to promote job policies.

In particular, in this evaluation, Gwangju’s differentiated job policies received high praise, including the only nationwide projects such as ▲‘Gwangju-type Job with Labor-Management Win-win,’ selected as the first project of Korea’s Win-win Regional Jobs ▲‘Bitgoeul Small Business Guardian,’ a two-in-one project supporting small business owners by newly employing youth ▲‘Gwangju Job Experience Dream Project,’ where the local government supports youth employment wages to provide work experience ▲the only nationwide establishment of the ‘Artificial Intelligence Industry Convergence Complex,’ a treasure trove for future job creation ▲and the ‘Gwangju Job Project Performance Management System,’ which motivates all local stakeholders to work towards job creation.

Additionally, in terms of job creation performance, Gwangju received favorable reviews by achieving 42,000 jobs in 2019, exceeding the target of 38,000 jobs.

Gwangju plans to use the 200 million KRW prize money from this Grand Prize to further create better jobs for local youth and others.

Mayor Lee Yong-seop said, “Since taking office, I have devoted myself to promoting job policies under the banner of ‘Job Mayor’ for the past three years,” and added, “We will not be satisfied with this national top award and will lead creative job policy innovations in the fields of Digital New Deal, Green New Deal, and Human New Deal, which are the future directions of Korea.”
